Lung and Respiratory System Detoxification

The lungs are vital elimination organs as they facilitate the exchange of carbon dioxide (a waste product of the body's cells) and oxygen in the blood, which carries oxygen to the cells to produce energy. Unfortunately, today's ever increasing pollution problems are causing untold damage to not just our lungs but to our quality of life and overall good health.

When any of the first three detoxification areas (liver, kidney's, gallbladder) are clogged or closed down with waste materials, the lymphatic and blood systems become saturated with toxic poisons. When this occurs, acid and other waste materials become trapped in tissue and cells and begin the rotting/putrefaction process. The putrefaction process exponentially increases toxicity levels (toxemia) potentially leading to many degenerative health and rapid aging problems. Most begin life with a pair of bright and healthy pink lungs, but an adult city dweller can eventually develop dull, pink-gray lungs complete with black patches, indicating the negative effects of poor air quality with respect to respiratory health.

Lungs function by bringing in blood from two primary sources, pulmonary and bronchial vessels (support respiratory tissue). Deoxygenated blood flows through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs to be re-oxygenated and remove toxic waste gas (carbon dioxide). Then pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood to the heart then through the arterial system to the entire body. This process plays a critical role since the lungs are the first detoxification organ to come into contact with airborne toxins, chemicals, viruses, bacteria, and many other foreign body irritants. We should enhance our lungs ability to detoxify us by increasing the simple process of breathing.

It is important to note that smoking and breathing in toxins is not in the best interest of health as it introduces large amounts of toxic chemicals into the body and damages the lungs. Regular deep breathing of clean air helps on two fronts. It keeps the lungs clear and remove damaging toxins from the body quickly.

For an effective cleansing of our lungs, we must learn to breathe the right way which is using the diaphragm when breathing. This allows air to penetrate deeper into the lungs, absorb more oxygen and release more carbon dioxide. This is done best by taking long deep breaths to encourage the air to flow deep into our diaphragm where the belly blots up slightly. Then hold for as long as comfortable before exhaling. Deep breathing should become a regular habit, especially for those who don't exercise. It is prudent to deep breath several times daily to encourage optimal health and wellness. Deep diaphragm breathing can be performed almost anywhere while releasing damaging toxic gases and providing a wide range of positive health benefits. It is best to practice deep breathing by avoiding areas of high air pollution. Areas around natural water like lakes, rivers and oceans are likely to be less polluted than industrial areas. Also areas where there are lots of natural greenery where plants and trees provide more clean oxygen.

Lung Cleansing Foods:
It's important to avoid consuming fatty, highly refined foods with artificial additives (chemical toxins) during lung detoxification.

During the cleanse use alkalizing foods in a ratio of at least 4:1 over acid-forming foods. Below are foods to eat and not eat for lung health.

  • Sea Vegetables
  • Blue Green Alga's
  • Green Leafy Vegetables
  • Limes
  • Lemons
  • Melons (All)
  • Celery
  • Berries (Red & Purple)
  • Raw Fruits
  • Carrots
  • Cranberries
  • Raw Fruits

  • Lung, Cleansing Herbs:
  • Rosemary Leaf - An aromatic herb used to promote increased blood and lymph flow while helping to reduce mucous production (congestion). Also acts as a circulatory and nerve stimulant. It is considered one of the most powerful natural remedies to strengthen the nervous system. This herb contains calcium and vitamins A and C, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc all of which promote lung health.
  • Scutellaria (Root/Aerial Portion) - This herb is a powerful immune booster, especially for the upper body. Traditionally used to help speed recovery, relax nervous tension and renew the nervous system.
  • Bitter Melon Fruit - Used to help nourish the lungs. This herb is a natural sweetener.
  • Honeysuckle Flowers - This herb has broad-spectrum immune system supporting properties. Wonderful for nourishing the lungs and spleen. Honeysuckle's cleansing properties are greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with chrysanthemum flowers next.
  • Chrysanthemum Flowers - This herb has excellent immune system supporting properties. A great herb for nourishing the lungs. Most effective when combined with Mulberry next.
  • White Mulberry Twig - Helps to strengthen the bronchial tubes.

    Along with the herbs mentioned above, one should begin a cleansing diet at the same time. Before starting a cleansing diet, one should consume ample amounts of liquids (hydrate), distilled water, fresh fruits, vegetables and juices will help prepare the body for an effective cleans.
    - First - is a cleansing diet to eliminate all processed foods, saturated fats, coffee, white sugar, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, tobacco, and red meat.
    - Second - add some cleansing herbs mentioned above either in single or combination formulas made to cleanse the bodies systems.

    Caution: Keep in mind that herbs are very powerful remedies and can produce undesirable side effects. There can also be herbal interactions with prescription drugs. If you're taking any drugs, be sure to do thoroughly research or discuss this with your health care professional before taking any herbal cleansing remedies. It's wise to discontinue use of a product if you develop any negative side effects (diarrhea, excessively loose stools, or discomfort of any kind). If you develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, joint pains, headache, rashes, irritation or just plain don't feel good, you may be cleansing too quickly and your body is not capable of dealing with excessive toxins in the blood adequately. Discontinue use if this occurs until you feel better and then resume cleansing at a slower pace.

    1. Quart jar (glass) with rubber seal lid (Mason is excellent)
    2. Blender (any blender that blends fruits and vegetables will work - it's more important to blend regularly than to have a designer blender)
    3. Juicer (electric is best)

    Drink at least 8 oz. of blended formula each day to start and increase up to 32-64 oz. (1 qt. or liter) each day for best results.

  • Lung Detoxification Program:
    The following are prudent steps to a successful lung cleansing program;
    1. Cleanse your lungs with prudent respiratory exercises in combination with a high water content diet filled with raw, fresh fruits and vegetables along with a selection or combination of herbs listed above to clean out the lungs and respiratory system. The herbs chosen will depend on the amount of lung dysfunction and the length of time these problems has been present.
    2. While cleansing the lungs and respiratory system, you should replenish the beneficial bacteria to flora balance with a probiotic supplement, which in turn helps the immune system operate at maximum efficiency.
    3. Once the lungs and respiratory system are clean, a whole body cleansing/detoxification maintenance program should be ongoing to maintain total internal body cleanliness.
