Astaxanthin is the main carotenoid pigment found in aquatic animals. This long chain
molecular red-orange pigment is closely related to other well-known carotenoids such
as beta-carotene and lutein, but has significantly stronger antioxidant properties
than any other antioxidant known. Commercially it is primarily extracted from the
microalgae haematococcus pluvialis with a secondary source being the yeast
Astaxanthin has unique chemical properties
The Hydroxyl groups at the end of the Astaxanthin molecule make it very different from beta
carotene and other carotenoids chemically. This small difference adds up to a huge disparity
in terms of functional abilities in the human body and is what gives astaxanthin its unique
and enormous health beneficial properties.
As a natural antioxidant, it does not just donate electrons like other antioxidants, instead
it fits nicely into the cell membrane matrix and binds with free radicals rather
than donating electrons. When molecules donate electrons to other molecule, they to become
imbalanced free radicals continuing a domino electron transfer effect that damage cells and
intercellular DNA compromising healthy cell function (biological damage – aging). It is this cells
and DNA oxidative damage that compromises the body’s natural antioxidant neutralizing
systems of which many scientists believe is responsible for most if not all of the aging process.
These natural antioxidant generating systems are currently being overwhelmed by the toxic
byproducts of modern behavior and consumptive habits along with the toxic environment which we
have created and now live.
Astaxanthin doesn't become a free radical when it binds to other oxidized
molecules thus stopping the health damaging oxygen free radical cascade or domino effect. In
short, astaxanthin is extremely bioavailable and a superior, broad spectrum antioxidant
(oxygen free radical scavenger) than traditional antioxidant agent. Recent scientific
studies have revealed remarkable dietary health benefits from supplementing with astaxanthin.
