The Facts About Acid and Alkaline Forming Foods

The battle for ultimate health is essentially monitoring, effectively modulating and maintaining the bodies internal biochemistry in a slightly alkaline pH state. While few know that foods consumed can be either acid or alkaline forming. While the acid or alkaline forming properties of foods consumed frequently represents one of the biggest health problems, properly understood and used can be among the most powerful tools in an effort to attain and maintain health.

All foods consumed are oxidized during the metabolic process, resulting in the formation of residue or ash. Alkaline forming foods contain predominate electrolyte minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium). Foods containing sulfur, phosphorus and chlorine minerals are acid forming. The stronger food mineral content dominates over the opposing group governing its acid or alkaline forming powers over internal biochemistry.

Acid Alkaline Forming Foods

As seen in the chart above, foods with dominate calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are alkaline forming while foods with dominate chlorine, phosphorus and sulfur are acid forming. Again, the more dominate the minerals the stronger the acid or alkaline reaction.

The below numeric food table lists degrees of alkalinity or acidity of food with higher numbers being alkaline and lower number being acid, in descending order.

    Foods not listed above are largely acid forming and an cause serious health problems if not consumed prudently. The acid or alkaline action values above represent the relative chemical modulating power of the different foods listed. The higher the number, the more power the food has to modulate internal biochemistry in either the alkaline or acid direction. The higher alkaline numbered foods can be extremely powerful tools in the battle to keep internal biochemistry in a slightly alkaline state of 7.3-7.4 ph.
